GREENCASTLE – Senior Lainey McCue went 4-for-5 with three home runs and a double for 8 RBI to lead the Trine softball team to a 17-4 win over host DePauw for its second win of the NCAA Division III Softball Championship regional round.
McCue tied NCAA Division III Softball Championship records and became just the third player to finish a postseason game with three home runs and the first since 2013. It is just the second time a player had eight RBI in a postseason game.
Trine's Sarah Belote has the school record with four home runs and 14 RBI.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Trine tied it in the top of the third with a solo home run from freshman Lexi Clark down the right-field line.
In the top of the fourth, McCue recorded her first home run, a three-run drive to right center to give Trine the 4-1 lead, its first of the game.
The Thunder added to its lead in the fifth, first with an RBI single down the left field line by freshman Taylor Murdock and then the second of McCue's home runs, this time a two-RBI effort.
Trine finished its scoring in the top of the seventh when it put the game out of reach with 10 runs.
McCue once again highlighted the effort as she recorded both her third home run and a double in two at-bats in the inning.
