Irish get recruits for football, basketball

Notre Dame football added a commitment to its 2021 recruiting class when three-star offensive lineman Caleb Johnson, from Ocala, Florida, chose the Irish over offers from Alabama, Florida and LSU, among others. Johnson had previously been committed to Auburn.

The 6-foot-7, 295-pound Johnson is the 28th-ranked offensive tackle nationally, per and the No. 367 overall recruit. His is Notre Dame's fourth commitment this week and 23rd in the class, which ranks No. 8 nationally.

Not to be outdone, the Irish men's basketball team got a commitment from one of its top 2021 targets, South Bend Riley shooting guard Blake Wesley. The 6-foot-4, 170-pound Wesley is the No. 4 player in Indiana and 113th nationally. He was also a top target for Purdue and had an offer from Indiana.


Renfoe to minors

Tampa Bay designated outfielder Hunter Renfroe, a former TinCaps player, for assignment.

Venable hired to Red Sox staff

Boston hired Will Venable, a former Fort Wayne Wizards player, to be a bench coach on manager Alex Cora's staff.


On the course

In Belleair, Florida, breakthrough winners in their last starts, Sei Young Kim and Ally McDonald were on top again in the Pelican Women's Championship. The second-ranked Kim shot a 5-under 65 at Pelican Golf Club to take a one-stroke lead over McDonald. …

In St. Simons Island, Georgia, Robert Streb birdied his last two holes on the Plantation course at Seal Island and matched his career low with a 9-under 63, giving him a two-shot lead over Camilo Villegas in the RSM Classic.

Central Noble boys basketball postponed its season opener against Canterbury on Friday. The game will be held Nov. 28. … East Noble girls basketball learned that North Side would be unable to compete due to COVID. East Noble varsity will instead play South Bend Washington at 5 p.m. … Lakewood Park Christian boys basketball has moved its game against Prairie Heights to Tuesday. … Northrop's boys basketball game against New Haven has been delayed to Dec. 8. … Garrett's home wrestling meet Jan. 16 has been canceled. … Central Noble girls basketball game at Lakeland has been postponed from Tuesday to Jan. 21. The Lakeland boys basketball game at East Noble has been postponed from Nov. 28 to Jan. 19.

Football classics on Fox Indiana

On Monday and Tuesday, Fox Sports Indiana will replay six of the best IHSAA football state finals games since 2013. They include Bishop Dwenger's loss to Columbus East from 2013, airing at 5 p.m. Monday; Snider's victory over New Palestine from 2015, airing at 9 p.m. Monday; and Dwenger's quadruple-overtime victory over Evansville Central from 2018, airing at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
