Pandemic relief fund text a hoax

If the trauma and upheaval created by the COVID-19 pandemic weren't enough to disrupt even more lives, the Indiana Department of Revenue is warning that scammers are hard at work trying to take everything struggling Hoosiers have left.

Hoosiers receive a text message telling them they have received an “Economic Impact Payment” direct deposit of $1,200 from the “COVID-19 TREAS FUND,” and must accept the payment into their account by clicking on a link to a fake web address.

Officials warn that those who receive the message are asked to provide personal information that can be used to drain funds from their accounts.

The IRS has advised people who receive the message to take a screen shot of the message and email it to phishing@irs.gov and include the date, time and time zone they received the message, the number that appeared on their caller ID, and the number that received the text message.

Scammers will stop at nothing, and everyone who regularly receives text messages should be wary.
