2 slain as robbery turns deadly

Another injured; 3 men face murder charges

JAMIE DUFFY | The Journal Gazette

Fort Wayne police arrested three men in shootings that killed two people and badly injured a third early Wednesday.

Police said the shootings stemmed from a robbery that occurred about 12:30 a.m. at 2405 Barnhart Ave., just north of East State Boulevard near Hobson Road and Coliseum Boulevard.

Police found three adults who had been shot. One man died at the scene and a 23-year-old woman died at a hospital. A 27-year-old man was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.

Kyaw Hlang, 22, is charged with two counts of murder, two counts of felony murder, robbery, violating probation and violating re-entry court. Kerwins Louis, 20, is charged with two counts of felony murder, robbery and possession of a controlled substance. Jamesley Paul, 23, faces two counts of felony murder and robbery.

Felony murder is defined by law as a murder committed in the act of another felony.

Detectives took all three suspects into custody at different locations without incident, said Sofia Rosales-Scatena, Fort Wayne police public information officer.

“From there, interviews were conducted as well as multiple search warrants and, after their conclusion, all three suspects were arrested,” Rosales-Scatena said in an email.

The Allen County coroner will identify the man and woman who died. They would be the seventh and eighth homicide victims this year and fourth this month if the coroner rules their deaths as homicides after autopsies are performed.

Since Feb. 19, police have arrested at least five people who have been charged with murder or felony murder in the deaths of four people.

Cameron Blake Hallett, 22, was arrested Friday on a murder charge in the death of 15-year-old Eric McDonnell, shot in an alley between Euclid Avenue and Central Drive around 7:15 p.m. Feb. 19.

Another arrest was made Tuesday, hours after Tonisha T. Richardson, 25, was stabbed to death around 1 p.m. at Shoaff Park Villas in the 4700 block of Jason Drive, north of St. Joe and Reed roads.

Alisha R. Lampkin, 27, of Fort Wayne, was arrested on a preliminary charge of murder and was being held without bail.

Last year, Allen County had 29 homicides with three homicides as of Feb. 26.

In 2018, there were seven homicides by the end of February and in 2017 there were four homicides around this time.

In 2016, the year that ended with a record high 49 homicides, the first two months had four homicides that included a triple homicide on East Lewis Street.
