Man dies in 3 a.m. gunfire; 2 women shot in afternoon

JAMIE DUFFY | The Journal Gazette

One man is dead and three other people are hurt, two of those in critical condition, after two separate shootings ripped through the city's southeast side Sunday.

At 3 a.m., a shooting claimed the life of a Fort Wayne man at Colerick Street and Central Drive. Fort Wayne police found the victim after 911 calls directed them to the area.

A second victim was taken to a hospital by a private vehicle with life-threatening injuries, police said. Fort Wayne detectives believe the surviving victim was also involved in that shooting and are treating it as the same investigation.

About 4 p.m., police were called to a home at 4415 Oliver St., where two women were shot, reportedly outside. A red patio umbrella was set up in the front yard.

Both women were taken to a hospital, where one is fighting for her life, and the other had non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Mark Bieker, public information officer for the Fort Wayne police, said neighbors were being interviewed and surveillance footage was being sought.

Many people were sitting outside their homes Sunday afternoon because of the sunny weather.

Neighbors interviewed on Oliver Street claimed the shootings were both related to the fatal shooting of Tristan Tywan Norton Carter, 31, killed at the corner of Senate Avenue and Smith Street on Feb. 2., less than a block away and across the street from Abbett Elementary School.

Police could not confirm that information.

If the shooting death is ruled a homicide, it will be the 13th homicide in Allen County this year.

Both shootings remain under investigation, and an identification and manner of death will be released by the coroner's office at a later date.

If anyone has information about the shooting or surveillance video, they should call the detective bureau at 427-1201 or Crime Stoppers at 426-7867.
