Police on Tuesday identified the boy who died after a car struck him near his Warsaw school as Gidieon Cook.
The 8-year-old recently finished second grade at Harrison Elementary School and was attending summer school, the Warsaw Police Department said.
Gidieon – a former Cutie King at the North Webster Mermaid Festival – was an endless explorer who loved spending time outdoors with his father and wasn't shy about being a mamma's boy, according to his obituary.
“He made a lasting and unforgettable impression on everyone he crossed paths with,” the obituary said. “He will be dearly missed and forever remembered as a beautiful boy with a beautiful soul. Although his life was very short, Gidieon brought joy to his family that will last forever.”
Police believe Gidieon was crossing Husky Trail in the crosswalk at North Pointe Drive about 1:50 p.m. Monday when he was hit by a car driven by Raven L. Loubert, 24, of Tippecanoe.
Loubert has been cooperative with police. She provided a blood draw and a consensual search of her cellphone, police said.
Investigators are awaiting results of the forensic cellphone download and toxicology report, police said, noting they also interviewed witnesses who remained at the scene of the collision.
The car, a 2008 Nissan Sentra, was towed to the police department for processing, police said.
A vigil for Gidieon is planned for 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the crosswalk in front of Harrison Elementary.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday with the funeral at 1 p.m. Both will be at New Life Christian Church and World Outreach, 744 S. Kosciusko County Road 325 E., Warsaw.
