A man was shot to death tonight at Smith Street and Senate Avenue, police said.
If his death is declared a homicide, it would be the second homicide in less than a week and the third this month.
Fort Wayne police were called at 6:50 p.m. and found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds lying in the middle of the street, Mark Bieker, public information officer for the Fort Wayne Police Department, said.
Medics tried to save him, but he died before he could be taken to a hospital, Bieker said.
Witnesses told police they heard three to six shots and saw two people running from the scene.
The victim was across the street from Abbett Elementary in the frigid cold as police waited for the Allen County coroner to arrive. A police dog from the Allen County Sheriff's Department also investigated.
The man will be identified by the coroner's office.
There have been two homicides in Allen County this year. Friday, a 60-year-old woman was stabbed to death in an apartment in the 8600 block of Lakeside Drive near Tillman Road and Lafayette Street. A 31-year-old man was shot to death Feb. 2 in the 4400 block of Gaywood Drive.
