The last day of 2018 brought the year to a violent end with the slaying of 16-year-old Marlon Jamon Davis of Fort Wayne.
Davis was shot in the back, and his death was Allen County's 44th homicide of the year, the county coroner said Wednesday.
Fort Wayne police arrived at East Williams and South Lafayette streets at 4:30 p.m. Monday after reports of a shooting. Davis, however, had already died after he was transported to a hospital in a private car, according to Michael Joyner, public information officer for the Fort Wayne Police Department.
The killing prompted local rap artist Jesse Allen, whose son Jaquan Allen was shot to death here Dec. 27, 2008, to vent his feelings on Facebook.
“RIH (Rip in Heaven) to that young man who was gunned down and pray for the coward who snuck up on him and did it. ... That boy was 17 ... like my son,” Allen wrote.
Two other teenagers who were shot in the past week in separate incidents are in critical condition.
Terris Maliek Lee White, 19, was found lying in the parking lot of the Three Fountains Cooperative complex in the 4000 block of Wayne Trace about 9 p.m. Friday, police said. White was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Joshua Glen Barr, 19, was taken to a hospital after shots were fired at 9203 Spring Breeze Court, on the city's southwest side, just before 4 a.m. Saturday, police said.
A witness had called dispatchers about someone attempting to commit a burglary. The homeowner fired shots at the suspects as they ran, police said.
No arrests have been made in any of these shootings. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 260-427-1222 or Crime Stoppers at 260-436-7867.
Davis' death will likely not be the last one added to the 2018 homicide toll. The coroner has yet to rule on two deaths in which police have arrested suspects on murder charges.
Laura E. Larkin, 33, was found strangled to death in her home at 2429 Cass St. on Nov. 26. Cordell Patterson, 22, is charged with murder and robbery in her death.
Janaya Michelle Boone, 38, was found stabbed to death at the Regency Inn, 1004 Coliseum Blvd. W., on Dec. 12. Her husband, Tyrin Boone, 40, is charged with murder.
