Suspect arrested in Kendallville shooting

JAMIE DUFFY | The Journal Gazette

A 20-year-old Kendallville man has been arrested in the shooting death of another man.

Logan Dewitt, 20, of the 100 block of Sergeant Street, was arrested Wednesday on a preliminary charge of criminal recklessness while in possession of a deadly weapon. He is accused of fatally shooting Justin Rodman, 18, also of Kendallville, in an apartment.

Kendallville police were called at 1:23 p.m. Wednesday to Main and Sergeant streets. They found Rodman lying in the entryway to a duplex apartment at 113 Sergeant St. He appeared to have been shot in the torso, police said.

Emergency medics pronounced Rodman dead after trying to save his life for about a half hour, police said.

Kendallville police identified multiple people who were at the apartment when the shooting occurred. After a search warrant was issued by the Noble County prosecutor's office, Indiana State police crime scene technicians found the gun believed to have been used in the shooting.

Police believe the shooting took place in an upstairs apartment. Rodman then left the apartment and went downstairs, collapsing in the building's entry, police said.

The Noble County coroner's office will issue a ruling on the cause and manner of death, police said.
