Motel drug seller handed 61/2 years

29-year-old offered cocaine, heroin

A Fort Wayne man who admitted selling drugs from a room at a motel was sentenced Thursday to 61/2 years in federal prison.

Lafayette L. Carr, 29, sold cocaine and heroin at unnamed motels on Coliseum Boulevard and Goshen Road, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Fort Wayne. His customers led police in April to the operation he was running out of the Goshen Road business, the 16-page document says.

Several people reportedly told investigators including an Indiana State Police detective working as a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives task force officer that Carr – also known as Bama because he originally is from Alabama – sold the substances from Room 130 of the motel. Police started watching the hotel room April 17 and noticed people arriving there and quickly leaving – telltale signs of drug deals.

One vehicle that left the motel was stopped by police, and a passenger said they bought $20 worth of cocaine from Bama, the complaint says.

Carr's fiancee identified him as Bama after a traffic stop, police said, and a search of the motel room netted “67 individual knotted bags of a white substance, which field tested positive for cocaine” and 36 individually wrapped pieces of paper containing heroin, according to court documents. Police said they also found a syringe, a bag that tested positive for methamphetamine and a digital scale that tested positive for cocaine.

A .40-caliber handgun was found inside a coffee pot, investigators said.

Carr pleaded guilty in November to possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, a crime punishable by up to life in prison, a plea agreement filed in October says. He was sentenced Thursday by Judge Holly A. Brady to 78 months in prison, followed by two years' supervised release.
