New virus testing site added

Allen reports 42 additional case, no new deaths

ROSA SALTER RODRIGUEZ | The Journal Gazette

As Allen County COVID-19 cases continue to mount, Fort Wayne-area residents have an additional testing site.

The CVS pharmacy at 4225 Hobson Road will have drive-thru tests available beginning today as part of the chain's plan to double its testing sites in anticipation of a “second wave” of cases this fall, a news release said.

The tests are offered at no cost to insured and uninsured patients. Those seeking testing must schedule an appointment in advance at www.cvs.com.

The pharmacy has expanded testing to include children ages 12 and older as schools reopen, but a parent or legal guardian must complete the online registration and accompany patients 12 to 15 years old.

Other CVS test sites are 10170 Illinois Road, 6279 E. State Blvd. and 770 E. Dupont Road.

Allen County on Thursday reported that another 42 residents have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the county's total of confirmed cases to 5,777. No new deaths were reported to add to the county's 197 total.

The new cases keep the county in the orange zone in a model developed to track the spread of the disease by the Harvard Global Health Institute and posted on the county health department website.

Orange corresponds to 39 to 95 new cases a day – an accelerated spread of the virus.

The county has been in the lower half of the orange zone since the beginning of August.

Although orange means the county is at what the model defines as “dangerous levels” of spread, the scope does not require additional measures such as a return to closures of businesses and schools, the website states.

In other words, traditional public health measures including testing, contact tracing, isolation and quarantine are considered sufficient, the site says.

The Indiana State Department of Health uses a slightly different model that puts Allen County in a yellow, or cautionary, zone.

Indiana on Thursday reported an additional 850 cases and six deaths. The state totals stand at 108,646 cases and 3,253 deaths.

The state's latest seven-day positivity rate, a measure of how many people tested for COVID-19 test positive, stands at 4.5% for all tests and slightly higher, 6.1%, for unique individuals. The comparable Allen County statistics are 7.2% and 10.3%.
