Repairs made to Clinton gas leak

Journal Gazette

NIPSCO restored service Friday to residents and businesses affected by a nearly four-hour gas leak that disrupted rush-hour traffic Thursday along parts of North Clinton Street and Lima Road.

A City Utilities contractor – Midwest Trenchless Services LLC – hit a line while working on a water main Thursday afternoon, according to Frank Suarez, director of public information for the city's Division of Public Works and City Utilities.

Initial reports from public safety responders Thursday suggested that a NIPSCO subcontractor had caused the leak.

The leak started about 4:30 p.m. The Fort Wayne Fire Department had set up a safety area near Turnstone in the 3300 block of North Clinton and assisted with checking basements in the Edgewood Drive area to ensure the potential for gas explosions did not exist.

Several small businesses were forced to close and evacuate.

NIPSCO said in a statement Friday that once gas is stopped, the odor dissipates quickly, but if customers smell gas, they should call the utility's gas leak line at 1-800-634-3524.

When lines are damaged, NIPSCO does the repair work, but “generally the contractor that damaged the line is responsible for the cost of the repair work,” a spokeswoman said through email.

Contractors and homeowners are encouraged to call 811 at least two business days before any digging project.
