Woodburn company to invest $22 million, add 40 jobs


A cold-storage company in Woodburn plans to invest $22.75 million in real estate and equipment and add 40 jobs.

According to documents filed with the Department of Planning Services, P&B Cold Storage Inc. and B&P Real Estate Holdings LLC of 23202 Roemer Drive are asking to have a new location at 23288 Roemer Drive declared an Economic Revitalization Area.

The designation would allow the company to qualify for tax abatements related to the expansion.

The real estate improvements would come in the form of a new, 192,695-square-foot refrigerated warehouse at a vacant site in Woodburn Industrial Park. The building would cover an area bigger than three football fields, including the end zones.

Logistics and information technology equipment amounts to $2.75 million of the additional investment.

The new jobs would approximately double the company's current 40-person workforce. The company plans to hire 26 full-time and 10 part-time material handlers and four office workers, at an average salary of $18 an hour, by the end of this year.

The abatement would save the company $2.33 million in real estate taxes during 10 years and $104,000 during seven years in business personal property taxes.

Woodburn Mayor Joe Kelsey said Friday the expansion is good for Woodburn because 30 jobs is a substantial number for the small city.

"Woodburn is a city with a population of 1,600, so it's going to have a great impact on our city," he said.

"We're real happy to see them expanding because they've been good neighbors in Woodburn and they work very well with us."

Woodburn City Council gave the proposal preliminary approval April 16 and it will have a public hearing at 7 p.m. May 7 at City Hall, 22375 Main St.
