Sept. 26, 1975: Cleaning up after mud slide

COREY MCMAKEN | The Journal Gazette

Readers were asked to share fun captions for photos in this month's History Journal column.

The firefighter holding the hose is Richard Fenton of Fort Wayne, according to a letter from Fenton and his wife, whose first name was not given.

“He has long since been retired and cannot remember the actual circumstances for the photo,” she writes.

But she did share Fenton’s suggested caption for the photo: “Whoa! Did you fall down a manhole or something?!”

Some other captions:

• "Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you...wait, how many times was that?" – Laura Cantor, Fort Wayne

• "HA – he thought I was going to use warm water." – Greg Racine, Fort Wayne

• "Augustus Gloop emerges from Willy Wonka's chocolate river." – Barb Hunsberger

• "Maybe its time to break down and buy a washer and dryer." – Gary Bowman

• "I'm getting a real hosing." – Dick Shenfeld, Fort Wayne

• "I'm not that dirty!" – Marilyn Parish

• "Doesn't he have a fire to put out?" – Doug Reed, Fort Wayne

• "Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you...wait, how many times was that?" – Laura Cantor, Fort Wayne

• "Robert has learned at last not to play in mud puddles." – John Agnew, Fort Wayne

• "Well I learned my lesson. Spray-on tans should not be applied in multiple coats!" – John Harless, Fort Wayne

• "Next time we do a live version of 'Shawshank Redemption' I am NOT going to play 'Andy Dufresne!'" – Peter Trevino

• "These new public showers aren't quite as private as I thought they'd be." – Tim Machinske, Fort Wayne

The real story: This photo is from a series of pictures shot at the mud slide at the 1975 Johnny Appleseed Festival. Of course, that slide would leave participants in need of a shower.
