Customers flock to city hobby shop

TERRI RICHARDSON | The Journal Gazette

Paris McFarthing is not surprised to have seen an increase in customers at his store during the pandemic.

As owner of Phil's Hobby Shop at 3938 W. Jefferson Blvd., McFarthing agrees there's no better way to spend some down time than exploring a creative outlet.

“There's a mental aspect to hobbies,” McFarthing says, which has helped many people during the COVID-19 crisis.

It's also why McFarthing didn't stop answering the phones for customers during the shutdowns and offered curbside service.

McFarthing says the increase in customers has been two-fold: There are the people who are getting back to their hobbies, maybe even ones they used to do as kids but life got in the way, and those that are new to a hobby.

“Hobbies are another outlet,” McFarthing says. And since the store has been around since 1975, McFarthing says he is now seeing a greater number of generations of hobbyists passing down their love of whatever they are into to their kids or grandkids. “It's fun to see,” he says.

He's also seeing the hobbies people choose not just be something to pass the time while at home, but instead it's becoming a lifestyle.
