The Allen County Council has chosen a former state representative and city council member as its attorney.
Council members on Thursday unanimously approved hiring former Fort Wayne City Councilman Mitch Harper. He will earn $7,500 for the year with no benefits, County Auditor Nick Jordan said.
Council President Kyle Kerley said there "were a number of instances over the past year where legal advice would have been nice at the moment that we needed it."
Hiring an attorney is something council members have discussed in the past, Kerley said, and is allowed under state law.
Harper, a Republican, served in the Indiana House of Representatives from 1978-1990. He served on the Fort Wayne City Council from 2008 to 2016. Harper also ran for mayor of Fort Wayne in 2015, but lost to Mayor Tom Henry, a Democrat.
