A review of PFW's non-conference season
ELIZABETH WYMAN | The Journal Gazette
Purdue Fort Wayne (7-7) has one non-conference game left before Summit League play starts. The Mastodons play host to Siena Heights on Thursday in what will likely be a blowout, putting them presumably at 8-7 in non-conference play. Here's a couple of takeaways from the non-conference season:
• John Konchar and Kason Harrell more than carry this team. Konchar's averaging 18.4 points and Harrell's averaging 16.2. Both have scored in double figures in every game and likely the ball will live in their hands down the stretch.
• Rebounding has been wildly inconsistent. Coming into Tuesday's 87-77 win over IUPUI, PFW was at a minus-4 rebounding margin and IUPUI was at a plus-4.4. However, PFW outrebounded IUPUI by 1, but gave up 13 offensive rebounds. They're definitely a smaller team and help so much down low the rotations get a bit off and box outs are hit or miss.
• PFW's only at 7-7, but as Summit League play starts after Christmas, right now, they have the second best record behind only behind South Dakota State at 10-4. It's important to remember two of those wins – and most likely three after Thursday – came against Division 3 opponents.
