Despite seeming in control with a 10-point lead in the third quarter, the Mad Ants lost 124-117 to the Eastern Conference-worst Greensboro Swarm in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Wednesday night.
Greensboro (8-27) was led by Dwayne Bacon’s 51 points. He made 16 of 29 shots with 10 rebounds. Kobi Simmons added 30 points.
For Fort Wayne (17-19), which lost a third consecutive game, Daxter Miles Jr. had 24 points on 10-of-19 shooting. Brian Bowen II had 22 points and C.J. Wilcox added 20.
The Mad Ants missed their first five shots and fell behind 8-0 early at the Fieldhouse at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex. But Fort Wayne went on 25-12 run, culminating with a Bowen free throw, to take a 25-20 lead with 3:44 remaining in the first quarter.
The Mad Ants led 30-28 at the end of the quarter, despite shooting 33% to Greensboro’s 50%.
The Mad Ants still led at halftime, 61-57, paced by Bowen’s 14 points.
The Swarm rallied to tie it at 69 but the Mad Ants regained their lead and went up 86-76 with a run that included Bowen sending an underhand no-look pass to JaKeenan Gant for a layup.
Greensboro tied it at 100 on a Bacon layup and Simmons’ free throw, off a technical, gave the Swarm a one-point lead with 6:46 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Mad Ants, who got 12 points from Gant, got back within two but not any closer. They shot 43% from the field and Greensboro shot 48%.
Naz Mitrou-Long, who is recuperating from an ankle injury, didn’t play.
