Mad Ants drop pivotal game to Go-Go

JUSTIN A. COHN | The Journal Gazette

Walt Lemon Jr. had 26 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds tonight, but the Mad Ants lost 130-125 to the Capital City Go-Go in front of 544 fans at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Washington, D.C.

C.J. Wilcox had 24 points for Fort Wayne, making 8 of 12 attempts from 3-point range. The Mad Ants (17-18) have lost back-to-back games for the first time since Jan. 11. Since then, they’re 8-4.

With the NBA and G League all-star break upon us, the Mad Ants won’t play until Wednesday when they face the Greensboro Swarm in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Capital City (18-17) is 1½ games back of Delaware for the sixth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Fort Wayne is 2½ back with 15 games left in the regular season.

Jalen Jones led the Go-Go with 22 points. Johnathan Williams had 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Fort Wayne’s Brian Bowen II, just back from the NBA’s Indiana Pacers, had 18 points. Ben Moore added 16.

The Mad Ants took a 77-75 lead on Lemon’s 3-pointer with 9:27 remaining in the third quarter, but the Go-Go began to take control with a 24-14 run that culminated with a Jalen Hudson free throw for a 99-91 lead at the end of three quarters.

That lead grew to as many as 19 points – a Phil Booth jump shot made it 110-100 – but the Mad Ants rallied.

A Lemon steal set up a Moore layup to cut the Capital City lead to 126-123 with 22.8 seconds left in the fourth quarter. The Mad Ants remained down 3, at 128-125, after Stephan Hicks made two free throws with 10.9 seconds left.

But the rally ended there for Fort Wayne, which had lost Alize Johnson and Goga Bitadze to the Pacers after the 123-119 loss to Maine on Wednesday at Memorial Coliseum.
