Slumping Mad Ants lose to Canton

Journal Gazette

The Mad Ants' late-season swoon continued Tuesday as it dropped the second of two consecutive games to Canton, this one 122-115 at the Canton Memorial Civic Center in Canton, Ohio.

Fort Wayne (19-21) has now last six of its last seven and not even the return of guard Edmond Sumner from the Pacers could reverse the trend.

Adding to the Mad Ants' woes has been a lineup that has undergone multiple changes including: waiving Tra-Deon Hollins; losing Je'lon Hornbeak, who has served his five-game G League suspension for violating the anti-drug policy; signing Jovan Mooring; and multiple moves by the Indiana Pacers, who recalled Alize Johnson on Monday.

Sumner finished one point off his career high with 34 points to go along with seven assists and four rebounds. Stephan Hicks had 22 points and 12 rebounds, his ninth double-double of the season. Pacers two-way guard Davon Reed added 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Travin Thibodeaux added 12 points and four rebounds off the bench.

The Mad Ants, who lost a buzzer beater Saturday to Canton at Memorial Coliseum, jumped out to a 12-point lead as Sumner scored 21 in the first half. Fort Wayne led by eight at halftime.

Canton (16-23) outscored Fort Wayne 33-22 in the third quarter, despite shooting just over 40 percent from the floor. Jaron Blossomgame led the Charge with 12 of his team-high 29 points in the third quarter to take the lead back.

In the fourth quarter, Fort Wayne chipped away at the Canton lead and trailed 109-105 with 3:29 remaining, but Canton knocked down three of its final four shots to seal the victory.

Seven of Canton’s eight players who logged minutes on Tuesday night – including Blossomgame – finished with at least 10 points. Scoochie Smith finished with 19 points as well as 12 assists, and Chance Comanche tallied 17 points and 13 rebounds.

The Mad Ants travel to Wisconsin on Friday night.
