Komets' GM: Not panicking

JUSTIN A. COHN | The Journal Gazette

I spoke today with Komets general manager David Franke about his mindset with the team off to a 1-3-0 start, its worst since joining the ECHL in 2012. And he said no one is panicking.

"We’ve played four games," he said. "We’ve got things we’ve got to work on. We know that. We think the group we've got is still a good group. You can’t make total judgments after four games."

Full disclosure: One could argue the Komets' start in 2013-14 was worse; they were 0-1-2, but that depends on how you feel about shootout losses.

I'm fully in the camp that it's foolhardy to be riled up about a record after four games, but I know some of you are.

Franke said his concerns were about the following: the power play; the bad penalties the Komets have taken; the terrible breakouts from the defensive zone; and, primarily, the lack of offense that has put too much pressure on the goaltenders.

Some updates: Captain Jamie Schaafsma (upper body) and Garrett Ladd (concussion) will remain out this weekend, but Joseph Widmar (groin) is expected to make his season debut. And, remember, Taylor Crunk will be back from his suspension. Speaking of suspensions, former Komets player Daniel Maggio, who is now with Norfolk, got a two-game suspension for elbowing today and it's already his season suspension of the season.
