How it happened
Fort Wayne is one game closer to clinching the final playoff spot in the Eastern Division. The TinCaps retook the lead for good against the Captains in the bottom of the sixth when the bats came alive. With a two-out, two-strike count, an Owen Miller ground ball to center field scored Aldemar Burgos – who led off the inning with a double to center. After a wild pitch from Lake County starter Gregori Vasquez, Miller advanced to second. On a second consecutive two-out, two-strike count, Gabriel Arias doubled on a fly ball to right, scoring Miller to stretch the lead to 3-1.
In a fast paced first couple of innings, Michael Cantu put the TinCaps up 1-0 when he hit a 103-mph homer to center in the bottom of the second.
The Captains tied it in the top of the fourth as Jesse Berardi singled and stole second. Mitch Reeves singled and advanced to second on an Arias throwing error as Berardi scored.
TinCaps starting pitcher Tom Cosgrove went six innings and gave up one run on seven hits to pick up his third win. Reiss Knehr went two innings and gave up one hit in relief.
In Captains' reliever Dakody Clemmer's first inning
TinCaps reliever Evan Miller entered in the top of the ninth and stranded runners on second and third for his sixth save.
The TinCaps continue their quest for the final playoff spot Thursday in Game 2 of this three-game series. Five games remain in the regular season. After starting pitcher Luis Patiño and reliever Dylan Coleman were sent to the Arizona League Padres in rookie ball to finish their seasons, left-handed starter Joey Cantillo and right-handed reliever Nick Kuzia have been elevated. Cantillo is expected to pitch tomorrow.
