Do it Best to create up to 90 new jobs as Electric Works' anchor tenant

DAVE GONG | The Journal Gazette
It's official: Do it Best Corp., the largest privately-owned company in Indiana, announced today its intention to move its corporate headquarters to the Electric Works development south of downtown Fort Wayne, creating up to 90 new jobs over the next several years.

Do it Best CEO Dan Starr was joined by Mayor Tom Henry, Gov. Eric Holcomb and representatives from RTM Ventures, the firm developing the site, for the announcement. Do it Best is currently headquartered in New Haven.

"Being at Electric Works will help us be an employer of first choice, retaining and attracting top multi-generational talent not only from here in Fort Wayne, but also on a broader scale," Starr said in a statement. "It enables us to keep our roots in the community we've called home for 75 years, while at the same time positioning us for a bright future."

The company currently has about 400 employees and plans to grow that number by 20%, Starr told the assembled crowd at Building 26 on the former General Electric campus.

"Cultivating entrepreneurship, innovation and job creation is critical to Fort Wayne and Indiana's future," Josh Parker, a partner in RTM Ventures, said in a statement. "Successful public-private partnerships can create the right place to help employers to attract and retain talent, which is the currency of economic development. Electric Works presents a compelling home for growing and established technology-driven companies like Do it Best; their presence at Electric Works will help provide the foundation for bringing the community's vision of a district of energy, innovation and culture to life.”

Construction on Electric Works is expected to begin this summer, creating an estimated 2,000 jobs during the two-year construction phase. Weigand Construction will be the general contractor on the project and Bona Vita Architecture will lead design of the Do it Best headquarters. Both firms are based in Fort Wayne.
