Hernandez lowers ERA as TinCaps win
The TinCaps' pitching dominated in a combined two-hitter, and Owen Miller went 3 for 4 with a home run in his second game in the Midwest League to lead Fort Wayne to a 4-0 victory Thursday over the Lake County Captains at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio.
Osvaldo Hernandez started for the TinCaps (53-61, 21-24 second half) and pitched six shutout innings for the third time in his last seven starts. He gave up just one hit, a fourth-inning single, and had no walks and five strikeouts. Hernandez (10-4) lowered his league-best ERA to a season-low 1.81.
Miller gave the TinCaps all the offense they would need with a solo home run leading off the second. It was the second home run in as many games for the shortstop, who hit just two home runs in 49 games with Low-A Tri-City. Miller singled twice and scored on a Gabriel Arias single in the sixth to finish the scoring.
The TinCaps got insurance in the fifth when Jeisson Rosario's triple drove in Jalen Washington and Juan Fernandez. It was Rosario's fifth triple of the season.
Hernandez left after six innings, and two TinCaps relievers completed the shutout. Reiss Knehr pitched two innings and struck out four, and Jose Quezada had a perfect ninth with a strikeout.
Note: The TinCaps will likely cross the 4 million threshold in attendance at Parkview Field during their upcoming homestand. They stand fewer than 28,000 fans short. In the game the milestone is reached, $10,000 in prizes – including $4,000 in merchandise and prizes to one person designated the 4-millionth fan – will be given away, the team announced Thursday.
