Journal Gazette

Fernando Tatis Jr. hit two home runs, including a grand slam, to lift the TinCaps to an 8-1 win in a rain-shorted series opener in Burlington, Iowa, on Wednesday.

The game was called with one out in the bottom of the seventh.

Tatis hit his 14th and 15th home runs of the season and drove in five runs for Fort Wayne (13-7 second half, 39-51). His grand slam came in the seventh.

The TinCaps jumped to a 2-0 lead after the first when Tatis led off the game with a shot to left-center field, and Jorge Ona hit a homer to left field with one out.

Pedro Avila (4-1) struck out nine and walked one in six innings while giving up four hits for the TinCaps.

In moves made before the game, TinCaps got outfielder and second baseman Tyler Benson from short-season A Tri-City, while outfielder Rod Boykin was sent up to Advanced A Lake Elsinore.

Boykin was called up as former TinCap Michael Gettys has been placed on the Storm's disabled list.

Benson is a 21-year-old from New Jersey and was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 31st round in last month's draft.

Benson was drafted after three years at Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania. He was the first player drafted from the school since Matt Karchner was drafted 205th overall by Kansas City in 1989.
