North rallies late to win All Star Classic
The North All Stars won the Indiana Football Coaches Association North-South All Star Classic 25-24 at North Central High School in Indianapolis on Friday night, claiming victory for the fifth straight year in the 53rd edition of the game.
The North trailed 24-22 with 2:20 remaining in the fourth quarter when kicker Chris VanEekeren of Chesterton hit a field goal from 28 yards. The North, whose coaching staff was led by Bishop Dwenger head coach Jason Garrett and Saints defensive coordinator Casey Kolkman, stifled two drives by the South to clinch the win.
Snider tight end Simon Dellinger made a catch midway through the fourth quarter that was followed by a 24-yard scramble by quarterback Zack Merrill of Andrean to narrow the South's lead to 24-22.
In the third quarter, Bishop Luers's Norman Knapke threw a 33-yard pass to Brian Jenkins of Lafayette Jefferson for a touchdown, but the 2-point conversion failed, leaving the score at 17-15 in favor of the South.
The North got on the scoreboard first on Friday night on a run by Christopher Harness of Mishawka, and South Bend Riley's Jalen Jennings made an interception on the South's next drive. The South quickly returned with an interception taken for a touchdown by Trevor Larence of Whiteland to give the South a 7-6 lead.
The North took a 9-7 lead on a 41-yard field goal by VanEekeren, which they would take into the locker room at halftime.
Merrill was named the Tyler Roth Memorial MVP at the conclusion of the game.
