Carroll girls, Homestead boys race to titles

Carroll captured the girls cross-country title Saturday at the Northrop sectional as Chargers runners took three of the first five individual spots. Homestead took the boys team title with three top 10 finishers.

Carroll's Meagan Hathaway won the individual girls title with a time of 18 minutes, 55 seconds, while teammates Monroe Fruchey and Abigail Green joined her in the top five. 

Homestead's Julia Dvorak took second in 19:18.

Snider's Jesse Hamlin won the boys individual title in 16:08.5, besting Concordia's Reece Gibson by just three-tenths of a second. Cole Powers of Carroll finished in 16:20.5 to take third, while Ryan Ruppert in fifth and Keagan Stuckey in sixth paced the Spartans.

BELLMONT SECTIONAL: Norwell's Sydney Lambert won the girls individual title in 19:52.6 and led the Knights to a team victory in the process. Evan Walda of South Side won the boys championship with a time of 17:01.5, but the next five finishers were all from Bellmont, giving the Braves the team title. 

WEST NOBLE SECTIONAL: Westview took the top two spots in the boys meet to capture the team championship, with Spencer Carpenter winning individually in 16:24.8. East Noble's Kayla McCulloch won the girls meet in 19:04.2, but West Noble took the team title.

LAKELAND CHRISTIAN 4, WESTVIEW 2: At Westview, Tori Calizo and Jessi Calizo combined for three second-half goals to help the Cougars (14-3-2) capture the sectional title.

CARROLL 3, NORTHROP 0: At East Noble, Cali Geiger scored twice to lead the Chargers (13-3-3) to a sectional championship.

NORTHWOOD 1, DEKALB 0: At DeKalb, Morgan Stickley scored the game's only goal to win the sectional for the Panthers (9-6-3).

BELLMONT 4, BISHOP LUERS 0: At Bellmont, the Braves (16-0-2) won the sectional and remained undefeated behind two goals from Rylie Velez.

Boys soccer

LEO 5, HERITAGE 0: Reid Sproat scored three times to lead the Lions (9-5-1) to the Norwell sectional title.
