Error costs Starfires in 10th
Boone Grove beat South Adams 1-0 in 10 innings in the championship game of the Whiting Class 2A baseball regional Saturday.
The Wolves put runners on the corners with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning, scoring the regional-winning run when a throw to second trying to catch a base stealer sailed into the outfield.
Grant Besser struck out 13 batters for South Adams (28-3) in the championship game.
In the semifinals, the Starfires got two hits from Keegan Yoder to advance with a 1-0 eight-inning win over Hammond Noll.
Boone Grove (18-5) scored five first-inning runs off just one hit against Eastside (15-9).
CASTON REGIONAL: At Caston, a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh lifted Northfield to the Caston Regional title with a 3-2 win over Fremont.
The Eagles (15-15) scored a single run in the top of the inning to tie the game at 2 but left the bases loaded.
The Eagles advanced to the regional final thanks to Rhett Evans, who struck out 11 in a 4-0 win over Morgan Township.
Softball Class 4A
HARRISON SEMISTATE: Noblesville scored three runs in the eighth inning to break a tie at 2 and picked up a 5-3 semifinal win over Leo.
The Lions (25-4) brought the potential tying run to the plate in the bottom of the inning but couldn't push any runs across to extend their season.
TWIN LAKES SEMISTATE: Knox scored in the second and seventh inning to hand Bellmont (24-2) just its second loss of the season, 2-0 in the semifinals.
LAVILLE SEMISTATE: Tipton's second-inning run proved enough in a 1-0 win over Whitko in the semifinals. The Wildcats (21-8) had just two base runners, who both reached via walks.
FRANKFORT SEMISTATE: Pioneer scored a pair of fourth-inning runs to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish in a 3-1 win over Fremont in the semifinals. Gabrielle Saltzgaber doubled in the bottom of the fourth to drive in Tory Foster to bring Fremont (26-6) within 2-1.
Pioneer (31-3) added an insurance tally in the seventh.
INDIVIDUAL REGIONALS: In Kokomo, Bishop Luers junior Caroline Rahrig suffered her first defeat of the season, falling to the eventual regional champion, Muncie Burris sophomore Isabelle Behrman 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals. Rahrig, the Knights' No. 1 player, wrapped up her season at 17-1.
South Side's Shamari Jackson and Trinity Johnson received a bye to the regional doubles championship before losing 6-0, 6-0 to Lafayette Central Catholic's senior duo of Lizzie Cramer and Sami Royer.
