Saints boys tie golf record at Lions' tourney

The Bishop Dwenger boys golf team tied a tournament record with 299 at the Leo Invitational Saturday and won the event by 24 strokes over second-place Homestead.

The Saints' Logan Ryan led all scorers at Cedar Creek Golf Club with a 1-under 70 that included three birdies.

Teammates Danny Kimes and Corey Ryan shot 74 and 75, respectively, to give Dwenger three Top 5 finishers. 

Homestead's Garrett Willis shot 71 and finished second, while Bishop Luers' Stephen Bolan took third with a 72.

Concord finished third with a team score of 328, led by Travis Herman with a 78.


NORTHROP 7-4, BELLMONT 6-1: The Bruins (17-6) swept a road doubleheader thanks to Gavin Schoenle, who homered and doubled. Nick Teeple took the loss in both games for Bellmont (8-9).

HOMESTEAD 15, MISSISSINEWA 0: Will Ferguson and and Carter Mathison combined to pitch a shutout at Mississinewa and the Spartans (14-7) scored in all five innings.  Eli MacDonald and Kade Kolpien homered.

FREMONT 5-2, BLACKHAWK CHRISTIAN 3-5: The Braves (7-13) split a road doubleheader behind doubles from Kaleb Study and Kyle Zurbuch. Both teams committed five errors in the second game.

LEO 6-14, WOODLAN 0-4: The Lions (17-4) gave up just five hits in two games to gain a sweep at home. Leo's Ryan Hackworth, Lukas Kline and Max Minich all homered in the second game.

FAIRFIELD 10, CENTRAL NOBLE 0: Sophomore Adam Schrock pitched a shutout with five strikeouts for the Falcons (10-10). Four Fairfield players had two hits.


CARROLL 5, NORTH CENTRAL 0: The Chargers (19-0) did not lose a set and remained undefeated. Sydney Jackson and Katelyn VanWyngarden both won matches 6-0, 6-0 at home.

BISHOP LUERS 5, KOKOMO 0: Caroline Rahrig won the top singles match 6-0, 6-0, and the Knights did not drop a set at Culver Tennis Center.

VALPARAISO 4, BISHOP LUERS 1: Rahrig won her match 6-1, 6-0, but Luers lost all four of the other matches.

HOMESTEAD 4, NORWELL 1: The Knights' Breann Barger won the top singles match 6-2, 6-1 over Jenna Lewis, while Molly Burton and Grace White won singles matches for Homestead.

Norwell (15-2) lost for just the second time this season.
