Legends' basketball coach leaving
North Side boys basketball Shabaz Khaliq is leaving the program after eight years, according to media reports.
First reported by Troy Derengowski of RadioTroy.com in Richmond, Khaliq is expected to take over the program at Richmond, pending school board approval today.
Khaliq, a 1995 graduate of North Side, was 145-50 in eight seasons, leading the Legends to a semistate championship and three sectional titles. The 2017 state championship appearance was the first for the program since 1965.
He's never had a losing record at North Side (he went 10-10 in his first season) and won at least a share of the SAC regular-season title three times and currently has the longest streak of SAC Tournament titles with five (2013-17).
Before coaching at his alma mater, he was 30-14 in two seasons at Elmhurst in 2008-09 and 2009-10, leading the Trojans to a regional in 2010.
Khaliq played college basketball at Earlham College in Richmond.
The Red Devils finished the 2017-18 season 8-27 under Rick Wedlow, who resigned March 14 after going 21-55 in three seasons. The North Central Conference program fell in the semistate championship in 2015 under Joe Luce, who left to coach at Jeffersonville.
