The Homestead senior class was helped out by some strong freshman performances at the South Side sectional at Brown Natatorium on Saturday.
The Spartans won their first sectional title since 2014, beating runner-up Carroll 525-515. Concordia was third (274), Bishop Dwenger fourth (216) and Snider fifth (196).
“I'm just really proud of the girls and happy for the seniors,” Spartans coach Justin Max said. “This is the first time this senior class has won, and it's such a great class. They've all contributed so much to the program, especially the divers. It's nice to give them this moment.”
The Spartans got wins from the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.00), freshman Audrey Crowel in the 200 freestyle (1:51.29) and 100 butterfly (55.97), freshman Maggie Stock in the 100 freestyle (50.99, sectional record) and freshman Lily Kaiser in the 500 freestyle (5:06.15).
“We have a very talented group of freshmen, we've known that all season,” Max said. “We've also known that they can come to these meets and be just freshmen with the nerves, anxiety and emotions of it. The seniors have done a good job showing them the way.”
Homestead was also boosted by divers Jackie Brenn, Mallory Walker and Kayla Luarde who finished first, second and third Bishop Dwenger freshman Anna Yaggy finished fourth and qualified for Tuesday's regional.
Carroll got wins from Mallory Jackson in the 200 individual medley (2:03.63) and 100 backstroke (55.26, sectional record), Avery Brooks in the 50 freestyle (24.08), the 200 freestyle relay (1:35.54, sectional record) and 400 freestyle relay (3:28.26).
The Chargers also qualified the 200 medley relay (1:47.09), Mya VanderHagen in the 200 freestyle (1:52.73) and 100 butterfly (56.42), Teagan Moon in the 100 butterfly (56.04) and Grace Hanna in the 100 backstroke (57.23).
Bishop Dwenger's Laura Wright won the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.09.
The diving regionals are Tuesday, the state preliminary races are Friday and the championships Saturday.
