Homestead wins tennis tourney
After surviving a difficult test in the semifinals, the Homestead boys tennis team defeated Carroll 5-0 in the finals to win the Carroll Invitational.
David Heiney defeated Ethan Radke 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 singles and, at No. 2 singles, Thomas Weir beat Luke Stoffel 6-3, 6-4.
The Spartans won 36 of the other 39 games in the finals.
This came after Homestead slipped past Indianapolis Cathedral 3-2 with victories in all three singles matches: Heiney beat Abe Wojtalik 6-1, 6-1; Daniel Gilbert beat Levi Wojtalik 6-1, 6-0; and Bryant Zitlaw defeated Jack Haigerty 6-0, 6-2.
In the other semifinal, Carroll beat Canterbury 3-2, led by Radke's 6-2, 6-3 victory over Nish Reddy.
Cathedral took third place with a 4-1 victory over Canterbury.
MARION INVITATIONAL: The Carroll girls won the Elite Race portion of the meet with 43 points, paced by Zoe Duffus' second-place finish in 17:45.4, just behind the 17:34.9 of DeKalb's Tyler Schwartz.
MISSISSINEWA 3, WHITKO 1: In Gas City, Julia Seifert scored the lone Wildcats goal, after a pass from Abi Hartman, and Stephanie Baughman had 14 saves.
