Spartans girls get more recognition
The Homestead girls basketball team was recognized Thursday for finishing 11th in the final MaxPreps poll.
The Spartans (28-2) beat Indianapolis Pike 61-54, on Feb. 25 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse for the Class 4A state championship. Homestead is one of 20 schools being honored on the MaxPreps Tour of Champions.
Indiana Army National Guard Sergeant Lamont Lankford presented the team with the Army National Guard national ranking trophy Thursday afternoon during a lunch assembly. The team also received a banner.
“It's a great honor for our school and community. It's a reflection of the hard work the girls have put in for several years and this is excellent recognition for them and the school,” Homestead coach Rod Parker said in a news release.
Computer rankings are used to determine team rank for the Tour of Champions. The system utilizes game results stored in a database. Generally, the more a team wins the higher the ranking, but the system takes into account quality wins (against other highly ranked opponents), margin of victory and strength of schedule. Playoff games are weighted 2.1 times a regular season game.
