Swanigan impressive in Summer League debut
Power forward Caleb Swanigan made his presence felt in his Summer League debut with the Portland Trail Blazers on tonight in Las Vegas.
The Homestead graduate, who left Purdue and became a first-round pick in June's NBA draft, led the Trail Blazers with 16 points. He dominated the boards with 13 rebounds, as the Trail Blazers beat the Utah Jazz 72-63.
Another local product, Notre Dame's V.J. Beachem, was less impressive in his first game of the Summer League season with Minnesota. The guard, who played his high-school basketball at New Haven, only hit one free throw while going 0 for 7 from the field in the Timberwolves 97-72 loss to the Toronto Raptors.
Both Swanigan and Beachem will return to the court Sunday as Minnesota takes on the Denver Nuggets at 6:30 p.m. followed by Portland's matchup with the Boston Celtics at 8:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN 2.
