No. 3 Irish use hot shooting, defense to crush Spartans

SOUTH BEND – Arike Ogunbowale scored 23 points and No. 3 Notre Dame beat Michigan State 90-59 on Wednesday in its first home game in 25 days.

Junior transfer Jessica Shepard had 19 points, Jackie Young added 13 points and graduate transfer Lili Thompson had 12 for Notre Dame (8-1).

The Irish went 6-1 on the road, the loss coming Sunday at No. 1 Connecticut.

Jenna Allen led Michigan State (5-3) with 28 points.

Coach Muffet McGraw used mostly a seven-player rotation and her Irish shot 80 percent (8 of 10) in the second quarter and held the Spartans scoreless over the final 6:16 to take a 47-16 halftime lead.

Despite shooting just 33 percent in the third quarter, including a 2:23 scoreless streak to end it, Notre Dame led 63-40 heading into the final quarter.

Notre Dame shot 51.8 percent from the field while holding Michigan State to 30.8, and the Irish outrebounded the Spartans, 44-34, as Thompson, a 5-foot-7 guard, snared a team-high nine.

No. 11 INDIANA TECH 68, AQUINAS 63: In Grand Rapids, Michigan, the Warriors (10-2, 4-1 WHAC) were paced by a 23-5 first quarter as the Saints' (7-4, 4-2) comeback fell short despite outscoring Tech in the final three quarters.

Keanna Gary led the Warriors with 22 points and nine rebounds, Kendall Knapke added 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals and Haley Cook scored 12.

Michaela Faber scored 15 and had 16 rebounds to lead Aquinas. 

TRINE 85, KALAMAZOO 25: In Kalamazoo, Michigan, Kayla Freeman led the Thunder (8-0, 2-0 MIAA) with 13 points off the bench, Cassidy Williams added 11 and Brandi Dawson 10. 

Emily Kozal scored nine for Kalamazoo (2-4, 0-1). 

TAYLOR 69, SAINT FRANCIS 50: In Upland, Jalyn Foland led the Cougars (7-4, 2-2 Crossroads) with 13 points. 

Kendall Bradbury scored 23 for the Trojans (7-5, 3-1) and Josie Cobb added 16. 

GRACE 67, HUNTINGTON 61: In Winona Lake, Brooke Sugg led the Lancers (5-7, 2-2 Crossroads) with 18 points, Kelsie Peterson added 13 and Vironnica Drake 11.

Sarah Fryman scored 20, Casey Morton added 11 and Brooke Saylor finished with 10 for the Foresters (8-3, 2-2). 

DEFIANCE 79, MANCHESTER 64: In Defiance, Ohio, Nicole Weaver led the Spartans (1-5, 0-2 HCAC), Mikalia Taylor added 11 and Hannah Smith 10.

Lauren Rogers and Sam Ervin each scored 16 for the Yellow Jackets (2-4, 1-1).
