JOURNAL GAZETTE

Trine opened Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play Saturday with a 56-21 win over Albion in Albion, Michigan, plus a milestone performance by Lamar Carswell.

The junior running back had a season-high 204 yards on 10 carries and pushed his career rushing total to 2,092 yards, becoming just the fifth player in Trine history to reach 2,000.

Carswell scored three touchdowns as the Thunder (5-0, 1-0 MIAA) built a 49-7 halftime lead. Jeffery Barnett also had three first-half scores, all on passes from Evan Wyse, who completed 5 of 6 attempts for 172 yards.

Albion (1-4, 0-1) suffered four interceptions. Marcus Winters had two of those picks to raise his season total to five.

MANCHESTER 23, DEFIANCE 21: In Defiance, Ohio, freshman Kody Graham made a 22-yard field goal with 24 seconds to play as the Spartans (2-3, 1-2 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) rallied from a 21-14 deficit. Graham had missed the extra-point kick with 1:08 left after Jared Bourff caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Alex Downard. Defiance (1-5, 1-3) failed to recover an onside kick that set up the winning drive. Downard completed 17 of 36 throws for 174 yards.
