Local club ousted from tournament

JUSTIN A. COHN | The Journal Gazette

The Fort Wayne Champs, a team made up predominantly of former Mad Ants players, was knocked out of The Basketball Tournament, a $2 million winner-take-all competition Sunday.

The Champs reached the regional finals – the third round – before losing to the region's top seed, Loyalty is Love, 88-71 at Lexington, Kentucky.

Gary Talton, Travis Leslie and Rion Brown each had 14 points for the Champs, a team coached by Kevin Bloom and managed by Garrett Martz.

Isaiah Austin scored 23 points to lead Loyalty is Love. Willie Reed added 21.

There are still Fort Wayne ties in the tournament. Matt Mitchell manages Eberlein Drive and they're still in it. Deshaun Thomas is on the roster of Carmen's Crew, a team of Ohio State alumni that won its regional in Columbus, Ohio, on Sunday, though Thomas hasn't been playing.
