Oath Keepers' appalling ideology easily accessed
It still amazes me that, with smart cellphones and computers, we have the world's knowledge at our finger tips.
After reading Stan Needham's letter on June 14 stating what a wonderful organization Oath Keepers was, I was curious since I had never heard about this group and decided to do some research. I soon was appalled to learn what the founder of this group thought of John McCain. This group was founded in 2009 by Stewart Rhodes, who was a Ron Paul delegate in 2012. On May 5, 2012, in Tempe, Arizona, Rhodes while addressing a group of people stated: “John McCain should be tried for treason before a jury of his peers which he would deny you. He would deny you the right for a trial by jury but we would give him a trial by jury and then after we convict him he should be hung by the neck until dead.”
Please do an internet search. You too can watch the video of him stating this and learn about this group.
New grads walk the path their parents set for them
To all the parents of graduating students: I would like to say thank you for the hard work you put in to get your son or daughter ready for this next step in their future. You changed the diapers, cradled them when they were sick, cried with them when they were hurt and loved them when they felt alone. You went to the practices, cheered at the games and consoled them during the letdowns which, to them, were the end of the world.
You helped with the homework and steered them straight when they wanted to stray. The rules were the law but their smiles and hugs made you bend them just a little. Their boyfriends and girlfriends made you pull your hair out, but their caring and sometimes love for each other reminded you of your beautiful youth. Cars, insurance, curfews and grades tied everything together with jobs, help around the house and positive strokes for behavior.
The ages of 17 and 18 come so soon. You have created a mirror image of yourself and helped your children completely change it for the better. They are them, now, because of you. You have done your best and that is all you can do. Their God will guide them on a path that may not change the world, but it will surely make it a little better.
Be proud, Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa or guardian. Today we saw the future march up for a diploma and walk out the door to make history.
Thank you all for being partners in shaping the futures of our kids and community.
I love ya all!
Volunteer preparers help ease tax-prep worries
It's vital partnerships that make our community better, and the 2017 free Income Tax Preparation program is a great example. The Volunteer Center, United Way of Allen County, American Red Cross and St. Mary's Mother of God Church, together with other community partner groups, help our Allen County neighbors become more financially stable.
The 2017 VITA Free Income Tax program:
• Prepared 3,211 tax returns.
• Brought back $3,523,317 in tax returns to the Allen County community.
• Saved residents more than $1 million in tax preparation fees.
A total of 68 percent of taxpayers served earned less than $25,000.
Dedicated and highly trained volunteers – 64 of them – made this happen. IRS-certified tax preparation volunteers are trained to identify taxpayers who will qualify for the earned-income credit and other tax credits. The goal is to make sure every taxpayer can maximize their return. Volunteers also assist the tax preparers in planning for the next tax year.
Funding from an IRS grant, United Way of Allen County, Corporation for National and Community Service, Chase Bank and other resources provide the investment and additional resources to make this program possible.
