Man found dead in apartment

Police treating case as homicide; woman says 3-4 shots fired

By the time medics got to the second-story apartment on Cheviot Drive on Friday, the man was dead. Police are treating the death as a homicide, Michael Joyner, Fort Wayne Police Department public information officer, said at the scene.

Police received a 911 call about 1:55 p.m. asking for emergency medical services, but medic-trained dispatchers decided that more was involved and alerted police, Joyner said.

The homicide team was called in, Joyner said, but police cannot call it a homicide until the Allen County coroner investigates. If the coroner rules this death a homicide, it will be the ninth in Allen County this year.

Joyner would not identify how the man died, but a neighbor and a friend said he'd been shot.

The victim died upstairs in an apartment at 3411 Cheviot Drive at Waterloo Gardens Apartments near Hessen Cassel and Paulding roads.

Crowds including his family stood on the sidewalks as they maneuvered around the crime scene's yellow tape and through the high grass that hadn't been cut on either side of the street.

One woman said that she had heard three to four gunshots.

A man sitting across from the apartment said the victim was about 40 years old and was a friend of his.

“He didn't deserve it,” the friend said. Asked if he'd died by a gun, he replied “Last I heard he was shot.”

The victim's identity will be public once the autopsy is done and family has identified him.

Anyone with any information regarding this death is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 436-7867.
