Tommy Schrader, a candidate for Fort Wayne mayor in the Democratic primary, was arrested Tuesday on a misdemeanor criminal mischief charge.
As Schrader, 56, was booked into Allen County Jail, later to be released on his own recognizance, he won 216 votes in the primary.
He came in third place after Mayor Tom Henry with 6,797 votes and runner-up Gina Burgess, who garnered 875 votes.
Fort Wayne police spokesman Mark Bieker said Schrader was arrested at Georgetown Square. Bieker said he didn't have details on what Schrader did.
Allen County Democratic Chairwoman Misti Meehan said she hoped Schrader would get the help he needs to improve his life.
“I, as the chairperson, cannot stop anyone from running and the general public is very well aware of who Tommy Schrader is,” Meehan said. “I just hope this situation will provoke him to get some help. This situation has got to stop. If he would just stop for a second and address his issues, I believe he could have a better future than what he's having right now.”
