The Allen County Sheriff's Department is investigating the death of a man found Wednesday at Eagle Marsh Nature Preserve.

The man was found on a bench there with “an obvious head wound,” said Michael Burris of the Allen County coroner's office.

It's not clear what caused the wound, he said.

Investigators were called to the area south of Engle Road, east of West Jefferson Boulevard, about 11 a.m. A hiker found the man, who had his head back, on the bench.

“At this time, there doesn't seem to be any signs of foul play,” said Steve Stone, sheriff's department spokesman.

Resident escapes fire on Alabama

No one was injured during a house fire Wednesday on the city's north side, the Fort Wayne Fire Department said.

Fort Wayne firefighters arrived at 1720 Alabama Ave. at 7:50 a.m. to find the porch of a two-story home engulfed in flames, the fire department said.

One person was home at the time of the fire and was able to escape before firefighters arrived. A cat was rescued from the home by firefighters, the department said.

The fire was under control in 16 minutes, the department said.
