Thieves target cars on northeast side

JAMIE DUFFY | The Journal Gazette

Fort Wayne police are investigating numerous thefts from vehicles in northeast-side neighborhoods last week and this week.

Police received at least 10 reports of items taken from vehicles between Jan. 2 and Monday on streets near East State Boulevard and Maplecrest, Trier, Lahmeyer and Maysville roads, according to records given The Journal Gazette. Most of the thefts were reported over the weekend.

Thieves took wallets, cash, credit cards, jewelry, laptops, shoes, a GPS unit, a tablet and a backpack, among other items, police said.

The thefts were reported on Winnebago Drive, Simcoe Court, Marias Drive, Repton Drive, Compton Court and Greythorn Drive.

“It's a crime of opportunity or stupidity, however you wish to label it,” Michael Joyner, Fort Wayne Police Department public information officer,  wrote in an email response when asked why the numbers seemed to spike in that district.

“When you look at the items taken, it speaks for itself. Invite a criminal into your car and the invitation will be accepted. It takes 15 seconds to remove items of value from plain sight,” Joyner wrote.

In 2016, 19 thefts from vehicles were reported in the sector where those streets are located. Three such thefts were reported 2017.
