Pedestrian hit, killed by car on East State

JAMIE DUFFY | The Journal Gazette

A pedestrian was killed when he was struck by a vehicle on East State Boulevard just east of Coliseum Boulevard around 3 p.m. Thursday.

The victim walked into the path of a westbound car as he crossed State from the north to south side at Mathias Street, Michael Joyner, Fort Wayne police spokesman, said.

State Boulevard was closed to traffic in both directions for about two hours after the crash.

While investigators worked at the scene, a red Chevy Cruze sat parked in the street behind yellow police tape. A witness sobbed as she told a police officer what happened.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured, Joyner said.

Charlene Bloom, whose East State Boulevard home is a few doors from the crash, said the street is very busy at that hour and “bad for pedestrians.”

“I heard a thump and then all these squad cars,” Bloom said standing at the rail of her front porch.

A 35 mph speed limit is posted, “but nobody pays attention to it,” she said.
