Blunt force trauma ruled in St. Marys homicide

MATTHEW LEBLANC | The Journal Gazette

The man who died Sunday in his apartment on St. Marys Avenue was beaten to death, officials said Monday.

Police were called about 7:30 p.m. to what they thought was a shooting at 1309 St. Marys Ave. They found Fermin H. Rosa Jr., 67, inside on the lower level of the duplex, and paramedics pronounced him dead.

A police spokesman said Sunday the call came from someone who was not at the scene.

Investigators at the scene said neighbors reported hearing no shots, and the Allen County coroner's office said an autopsy revealed the cause of death was blunt force injuries to the head.

Rosa's death was ruled a homicide, according to a news release from the coroner's office.

It is the county's 20th homicide this year, outpacing 2017 when the 20th homicide was recorded in August. Allen County saw a record 49 slayings last year.

Few details have been revealed about the case, which is being investigated by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the coroner's office and the Allen County prosecutor's office.

Michael Joyner, a FWPD spokesman, said no suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made.

Rosa pleaded guilty in March 2017 to misdemeanor domestic battery and was sentenced to 30 days in jail, online court records show.

He was charged June 2, 2017, with invasion of privacy and three felony counts of domestic battery, online court records show. Days later, a judge dismissed the charges without prejudice, meaning they could have been refiled.
