South-side complex is damaged in blaze

MATTHEW LEBLANC | The Journal Gazette

Flames gutted an apartment building on the city's south side Friday.

Fort Wayne firefighters were called around 1:15 p.m. to the Tamera Gardens Apartments building at 6623 John St., where flames were shooting from the roof of the building. Witnesses said the fire might have been caused by a lightning strike, but fire crews could not confirm that.

Adam O'Connor, a spokesman for the Fort Wayne Fire Department, said no injuries to residents were reported, but a firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. O'Connor said firefighters saw flames coming from the attic area of the building when they arrived.

No one was inside the two-story building at the time when the fire started, according to the fire department. Firefighters arrived at the scene within two minutes of the fire being reported, and the blaze was under control by 3 p.m., the release said.

Witness Dan Murdock said he works for Keller Development, which constructed the building, and said there were eight units in the building.
