Northeast shooting leaves 1 dead

Coroner IDs man found slain Monday in hotel parking lot

Two men are dead in separate shootings in two days on Fort Wayne's northeast side.

Police were called about 4 p.m. Tuesday to an apartment at 4917 Northcrest Drive behind Northcrest Shopping Center. They found a man in critical condition suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, said Mark Bieker, Fort Wayne police spokesman.

The man died at the scene.

On Monday, a man was found dead inside an SUV about 1:40 p.m. outside Suburban Extended Stay Hotel at 3320 Coliseum Blvd. W. The Allen County coroner identified that man Tuesday as Samuel Douglas Westlake, 37. He was shot multiple times, the coroner said. Westlake is the sixth homicide victim in Allen County this year.

The deaths do not appear to be related, Bieker said.

Detectives on Tuesday were interviewing witnesses behind yellow crime scene tape at the Northcrest Drive location. The coroner will identify the victim following an autopsy, possibly today.

Police were also reviewing surveillance video taken from the hotel where Westlake died, according to a front desk manager who asked not to be identified. She said there are surveillance cameras all around the hotel and numerous others at adjacent businesses.

Michael Joyner, public information officer for the Fort Wayne Police Department, said hotel and area surveillance would be used in the investigation.

No one heard any shooting, the hotel manager said.

“It's a poured concrete building, and he was way at the end of the building, so nobody heard anything,” she said.
