Boy, 2, taken to firehouse dies; man arrested

JAMIE DUFFY | The Journal Gazette

Detectives with the Fort Wayne Police Department arrested Mitchell Vanryn, 27, of Fort Wayne in connection with the death investigation of a 2-year-old boy who was brought to a fire station on Fort Wayne's north side Thursday.

The Allen County coroner's office said Thursday it had not determined the cause and manner of the boy's death.

Vanryn was arrested on preliminary charges of Level 1 felony aggravated battery and Level 2 felony domestic battery, Michael Joyner, Fort Wayne Police Department public information officer, said in an email. Vanryn is being held on $25,000 bond for the first charge and no bond for the second charge. The investigation is still active and ongoing.

Fort Wayne police said family members took Malakai Michael Garrett to Fire Station No. 13 on North Clinton Street, just south of Auburn Road near Holland Elementary at 4:42 p.m. Wednesday.

The boy was rushed to a hospital in critical condition but later died, police said.

Joyner said police are waiting on the coroner's ruling.
