Finding of handgun locks down Bellmont

Police don't believe 2 boys meant harm

Two Bellmont High School students were taken to the Adams County Probation Department on Wednesday after they were linked to a gun found at the high school, Decatur Deputy Chief Mike Mahan said.

A school lockdown was called at 8:36 a.m., and by 8:41 a.m., the school resource office and officers from the Decatur Police Department and the Adams County Sheriff's Department had the handgun.

Mahan said the handgun was found under some ceiling tiles. The two boys were taken into custody.

“More interviews were conducted and there are more to come,” Mahan said. “The only explanation was (the boys were going) to show (the gun to) a friend. We don't believe there are any students being targeted.”

Bellmont High School officials issued a statement on the school's website Wednesday acknowledging the incident and school lockdown.

“The firearm has been recovered and authorities have identified that there was no intent to arouse harm in this incident,” the statement read.
