2 arrested, charged in 1988 slaying of South Bend woman
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Police have made two arrests in the 1988 slaying of a pregnant South Bend woman who was beaten to death while walking her dog.
The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's office says 76-year-old George Kearney and 56-year-old Barbara Brewster are both charged with one count of murder in 28-year-old Miriam Rice's killing.
Kearney was arrested Friday in South Bend and Brewster was apprehended in Calhoun County, Alabama, and is awaiting extradition to Indiana. Online records don't list attorneys who could speak on behalf of either defendant.
Rice left her home with her dog on the night of June 24, 1988, and never returned. Her dog was found the next day.
Rice's body was found with multiple skull fractures four days later, two miles from her home. She was four months pregnant.
