Drugstore robber sentenced to 4 years

MATTHEW LEBLANC | The Journal Gazette

A man who stole painkillers from a Fort Wayne pharmacy before fleeing from police in February was sentenced Wednesday to four years in prison.

Douglas W. Diemer, 52, robbed the Walgreens store at West State Boulevard and Wells Street, stealing oxycodone pills. He was charged with robbery and resisting arrest and pleaded guilty in November.

Allen Superior Court Judge Fran Gull sentenced him to four years in prison on the robbery charge and two years on the resisting charge. The sentences will be served together, for a total of four years behind bars.

Diemer also was given credit for 75 days spent in jail.

A Walgreens pharmacist gave Diemer three bottles of oxycodone with acetaminophen after he confronted her with one hand in his pocket, as though he had a gun, according to court documents. Diemer fled in a 2000 Chevy Impala, leading police on a short chase.

The car had a flat tire, and Diemer threw out a prescription bottle that contained some of the pills, court documents say.

Police said in the documents that Diemer apparently ate some of the pills, because a white, powdery substance was stuck to his lips and mouth.
